Topic: A Prescription Pandemic: Addressing Substance Use Disorder

Background
Globally, it is estimated that 35 million people suffer from substance use disorders, yet only a mere 1 in 7 will receive treatment. Across many countries, substance abuse and addiction have reached epidemic levels, yet many. Substance use disorder is a complex mental disorder characterized by the uncontrol overuse of legal or illegal drugs, alcohol, or medications. Oftentimes, this can lead to severe health, social, and financial problems for the individual and greater community.

The goal of this committee is to develop a policy framework for member nations to implement to prevent and treat substance use disorder through tackling the illicit drug trade and reinforcing treatment resources for addiction. Delegates should think about the roles of governmental entities, pharmaceutical companies, medical professionals, and the illicit drug market in contributing to the distribution of alcohol and drug products as well as the rehabilitation of individuals suffering from substance use disorder. Considering regional differences in public health infrastructure and substance use prevalence, the committee is encouraged to develop recommendations within the scope of the UN that can meet the diverse circumstances within member states.
